Searchers recovered two bodies in Fortune Bay Thursday afternoon, as a search continued for the third fisherman missing since Tuesday night.

"Late this afternoon, I guess, what was expected came when they found two of the bodies," said Steward May, the mayor of Belleoram.

"I guess now the town is in mourning. Just pray for us, because we really need it."

There was no immediate word on the identity of the victims.

May said the bodies were found about eight kilometers from where the fishermen's capsized boat was spotted Wednesday.

The seven-metre vessel, an uncovered fishing boat, was recovered Thursday morning, as well as debris that included some fishing gear.

Three people – skipper Eric Savoury, 45, and teenage crew members A.J. Poole and Tim Cox – were reported missing Tuesday night. They had left port early that morning.

May said earlier Belleoram was trying to pull together with the disappearance of the three men.

High winds frustrating searchers Tuesday night and through Wednesday, although waters were comparatively calm Thursday.

Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue co-ordinator Christopher Fitzgerald said Thursday morning that searchers had little reason to be hopeful.

The ocean temperature in the area is 8 degrees, he said. Even with the best survival gear, it's unlikely anyone submerged in water that cold would last more than 12 hours.

On Wednesday, residents of the town held out hope that the three men were safe.

"[They are] three good friends we grew up with, knew a lifetime … hopefully, they are over across the bay, safe," said friend Vincent Poole.

Bill Fizzard, who has fished for lobster with Savoury, says he does not believe his friend would have attempted to cross Fortune Bay to return home in bad weather. Risks, he said, come with the fishing business.

"No, he shouldn't have been out there, but everyone is trying to make a living this time of year," Fizzard said
